Don’t Go Through It — Grow Through It

{ 🌱 } – Most of the Time, You Have to Pick Yourself Up

Life is full of ups and downs. The moment you step out of your parents’ house, you’ll realise that the world is not so kind. Sometimes it’s because we lack skills or talent; other times, it’s the timing or situation.

The Brick Walls

There’s a quote I really like from a book called The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch:

The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.

The hardships and setbacks in life are not there to stop you. Instead, it is there to give us a chance to show if we really want something. And if you couldn’t go past through the brick walls, you don’t want it as bad as the others who could.

How to Beat the Wall

To overcome hardship, you need to have grit and resilience. Grit is the ability to finish what you started. Resilience is the ability to come back after a setback. In a sense, if you are resilient, grit comes naturally. Because you’ll always overcome any setbacks. Thus, you’ll always finish what you started.

In an episode of the Nike Trained podcast, Dr. Kevin Elko talked about what makes people with resilience different. People with resilience don’t let their emotions use them. They use those emotions to work in their favour instead. People with resilience have feelings, like everyone else, but they know how to control them.

So the next time you feel down, tell yourself that you won’t let this feeling affect your life and your work outcome. Accept the things that made you feel small, but don’t use them as an excuse. Instead of going into a slump, bounce back stronger by controlling your emotion. Remember why you are doing it on the first place and use it to fuel your passion.

Grow Through It

Every setback will always be challenging initially, but you’ll also grow through it once you go through it.

Hardships make you stronger, and only by overcoming these difficulties, you will be better than before. But remember, you will be able to overcome the obstacles only if you want it badly enough.

It is going to get easier someday, but not today.
